How Much Do You Want to See Through?
This is the one decision that changes how the shade feels, and almost nobody knows to ask about it.
Shade fabric has an openness factor. It’s the percentage of the weave that’s actually open. Lower number means a tighter weave, more heat blocked, and less you can see through. Higher number means more view and more light coming in. There’s no best answer, there’s only what that particular spot needs
- 1% to 3%, tight weave. The most heat and glare control we offer, plus real privacy after dark. Best on west-facing spots that get hammered in the afternoon, or anywhere you want the patio to feel like a room. You'll still get daylight, but the view goes soft.
- 5% to 10%, the middle. Where most people land. Cuts the heat and kills the glare while you can still comfortably see the yard. If you're covering a whole patio and you don't want to overthink it, this is the one.
- 14% and up, open weave. For when the view is the whole point. Pool decks, lake and water views, anywhere the scenery is why you're sitting there. Less heat control, but you keep the picture.
Motorized or Manual?
Both work. It comes down to how often you’ll actually use it, and how easy it is to reach.
Go manual if: it’s one shade, it’s easy to get to, and you’re mostly leaving it in one position through the season. A crank is dependable, there’s nothing to charge, and it costs less.
Go motorized if: you’ve got more than one or two shades, any of them are high or awkward to reach, or you want them moving through the day as the sun swings around. This is where people are honest with themselves. A manual shade that’s a hassle to crank is a shade that stays up all summer, and then you paid for shade you never used.

- Handheld remote, one button per shade or all of them at once

Sun sensors drop the shade when the sun hits a set brightness and pull it back up when it passes. Your patio is shaded at two in the afternoon whether or not anybody was home to press a button, and it’s open again by evening so you get your view back for dinner.
Wind sensors are the important one, and this is where a professional install separates itself from a fabric roll and a bracket. Exterior shades and hard wind do not mix. A wind sensor retracts the shade automatically when gusts pick up, which protects the fabric, the hardware, and whatever is sitting under it. Ark-La-Tex storms come up fast and they don’t wait for you to get home.

Depends on the fabric you pick. A tight 1% to 3% weave blocks the most, an open 14% weave blocks the least and keeps the most view. The bigger point is where the shade sits. Because it's on the outside, it stops sun before it reaches your space instead of after, and that's a real difference you feel on the patio, not a spec sheet difference. We'll match the fabric to how that particular spot gets hit.
Yes, and that surprises people. The fabric is a weave, not a solid panel. During the day you can see out clearly while somebody outside mostly sees the fabric. That flips after dark once your lights are on, so if you want evening privacy, tell us and we'll go tighter on the weave.
Retract them. Exterior shades aren't built to fight a storm, and any company that tells
you otherwise is setting you up for a warranty argument. This is exactly why we recommend a wind sensor on
motorized systems. It pulls the shade up on its own when gusts hit the threshold, whether you're home or not.
